Hello,
I would like to fit as much data as possible on my 1 GByte miniSD on my N80.
The problem is that when generating files with MapDownloader, I got files which had the same names that the ones generated by the application itself...The result is that I need to replace some files when I want to keep them all.
The same problem occurs when using Map Downloader several times: it overwrites over the files previously generated.
How does the naming scheme of the files work? To what extent can I rename the files in order to keep all of them?
Thanks,
Nicolas

AUto reply after a few hours of thinking: naming convention seems to be name-[type of map]-[zoom level]. This is bad news!! It basically means that I cannot load the phone with several extracts from Map Downloader, nor can it store a lot of cache to cover reasoanbly large areas.
The memory limitation issue is also a problem, as getting just one extract with good zoom level, of a reasonably large area (to get around the fact you can only keep one extract!) won't work either, as the program has to load the whole file corresponding to the zoom level.
These are limitations I hadn't found in software like NHGPS and SmartComGPS:
1) the maps are stored with enough metadata not to use the name of the file as a technical key
2) the file format and the software is organized in such a way that only the useful part (seen on screen) is loaded in memory, and hence there is no memory limitation.
I hope to see similar features in the future in GPSWatch.

Hey Nicolas! What you are
Hey Nicolas!
What you are commenting is exactly one of the limitations that I would welcome a fix to.
I was hoping that I could use this app for travelling, as I am on international business trips several times a year, so storing detailed maps of cities I will be travelling to would not only be useful, but also crucial for efficient usage of GPSWatch.
I mean, my memory card on my SE w800i is at this point 512MB, and since I don't use my phone as mp3-player, all of this memory could be used for map data.
So, how about making it possible to store the cache in selectable subfolders, i.e. having subfolders for Paris, London, NY ? Or even better, storing metadata in the files as Nicolas suggests.
Best regards,
Idar
Hi, Thanks for participating
Hi,
Thanks for participating in the community discussion.
I agree with you that the file name based naming is not the best way to organize map files. But the reason behind taking up this approach rather than others is to minimize the security altert prompts while accessing the file as GPSWatch is an unsigned application.
But we are definitely considering this idea of your for our upcoming release.
